Google Updates

Gmail Promotion Tabs are Great!

In the last few weeks Google has rolled out their new Gmail tabs bar that separates your Gmail into 5 main tabs:

  • Primary –  Personal conversations (Can’t be moved)
  • Social – Emails such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Etc
  • Promotions – Marketing emails and offers
  • Updates – Statements, invoices, and automated updates
  • Forums – Any online groups and forums you belong to

Love it or hate it here are some things to keep in mind.

The beauty of this filtering, particularly for those of us selling online and learning internet marketing, is we tend to be on too many lists. How many times have you signed up for a free gift or bought something one time and are bombarded with emails? Now we can easily find the mail we want and not be overwhelmed with an inbox that every day has hundreds of emails. If you have put off organizing your inbox, like I have, now you can quickly find those you love and want to hear from and unsubscribe from those you don’t resonate with and hit that unsubscribe link.  Feels great!

I love the new layout and believe others like myself agree. In the old style of delivery all the gmail came in one place and it was easy to miss something important. I was always scrolling fast and furiously to find a login to a webinar or a needed update. With the new tabs you can easily see in each category how many new emails you have and the number is highlighted. Very hard to miss.

Here is where the fear comes in. Anyone in business, online or offline, knows that building a relationship with your customers and subscribers is critical to your business and we all want our customers to receive our updates and newsletters. Many are concerned that with the new tabs their mail will get lost in the Gmail promotions tab and never be seen.

People are smarter than that. It is true that Google is making the initial selection of which tab your mail lands in but it is easy to drag and drop a name into the tab you prefer and then it will always show up there. Gmail will ask you if you want this person to show up in your new selection and you just click yes. We can easily instruct our subscribers and customers on how to do this too. We can also easily tell them to whitelist our emails to make sure they receive all of our important updates. You do have other ways to reach them don’t you? Facebook, Twitter, Skype. If not, get busy building those connections to better serve your customers. It is what I intend to do.

I believe those who really want to find me, follow me and connect with me will do just that and I look forward to building my blog (which is under construction as you can see) and forming relationships with real people who want help improving their lives, making money and finding passion in their work.

Have a worry free day,

Kit
