Valentine’s Day Ideas

Today is February 14th, Valentine’s Day. A day to celebrate and show special consideration for the one you love. Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr who lived some time in the 5th century but there is also evidence the ancient Romans celebrated a day of romance too.

Regardless of the origin it’s fun to get into the spirit of the day and shower your loved one and others with gifts of appreciation. I know some people hate the idea, feel it’s too commercialized and minimizes the idea of showing love every day.

But I love peak experiences and that’s what the day is designed for. Not that you don’t love your significant other every day, but to highlight it in a fun way on Valentines. Who doesn’t get caught up in the hum drum of every day life and could use a little fun.

Traditionally people give cards, candy and flowers…all great gifts…or a dinner out. But there are so many other things you can do.

Here are some other Valentine’s Day ideas:

  • Instead of a store bought card create one of your own with thoughtful words and memories and photos. Grab some quotes here or an attractive box and supplies at your local Michael’s store
  • Spend a night away in a hotel with a spa tub or a romantic cabin with a roaring fireplace
  • Buy their favorite beverage with cute glasses or mugs
  • Tickets to see their favorite band or sporting event or theatre show
  • A couples massage or give one yourself
  • Stay home, cook a special meal, line the hallway with rose petals and be dressed for the occasion in something sexy
  • Plan a last minute party with other couples and swap stories of how you met or funny memories and serve red food….Merlot, Italian, red peppers etc
  • Send balloons to their office if acceptable
  • Snuggle up with their favorite snack and beverage and watch a romantic movie together
  • Give gift certificates for housecleaning, gardener, chef, magazines
  • Give a boys or girls night out and you manage the kids

Most of these things you don’t have to plan in advance. Can get it done by tonight. Be creative. You know best the love language they speak and what gift will please them. Don’t let others dictate what you do or compare yourself to them.

Don’t Forget the Others In Your Life

Other Valentine gift ideas concern other people in your life. I think it is a great time to show love to them too. A thoughtful card, email, phone call or Facebook post to family members or business associates that have added value to your life. A visit with an elderly neighbor or a stop at a nursing home. And don’t forget the single people. So many others..strangers too. Buy a coffee for the person behind you. A balloon for a child.

One year my dad sent me a Valentine’s card signed “your secret admirer!” I loved it and he didn’t tell me it was him for a while. Have fun with the day!!! It’s never wrong to share your love. And doing so you will feel loving and loved in return.
