The Power of Imagining Yourself Achieving Your Goals

Believe in yourselfHow confident do you feel today? Probably like most people, you are feeling a little less self confident about at least one thing in your life. That is perfectly normal, especially if our life experiences are taking us a little out of our comfort zone. We need to use the power of imagining and see ourselves achieving our goals.

The problem arises when low self-esteem and feelings of low self worth are something we carry around with us all the time. We may not even know why we feel this way.

Often it can be traced back to events in our childhood, even by well meaning family who were trying to protect us.

Or it could be past mistakes we have made and we can’t seem to let those go. We cling to those as if they identify who we are today.

Whether we are experiencing a temporary feeling of lack of self-confidence, or one we face every day, there are some steps we can take to turn around low self-confidence into a belief that we can be successful in life and business. Let’s take a look.

 Imagine Yourself Achieving Your Goals

The first step is to imagine yourself achieving whatever it is you are trying to accomplish. Forget about the how, just dream and visualize. The how will come later. It’s almost magical.

If we can begin to imagine ourselves achieving our goals, we are well on the way to achieving them. If you have trouble imagining you can create a vision board to help clarify your thoughts. Want a new house? Find pictures similar to what you want.

Have a trip you want to take? Get those pictures. Have an income goal? Write it down and affirm you have reached it.

Articulating our goals, by either writing them down or telling them to a friend and then constantly reaffirming ourselves having achieved those goals, is essential to achieving them. Put up post it notes around your work space to remind you to say them out loud.

Write a message on your bathroom mirror. Write your goals and make them your screen wallpaper on your phone or computer.  Buy a goal journal and write in it and read it every day.

Act as if You Have Achieved Your Goal

To develop self-confidence, you must start to put action into your imagination.

Once you have imagined yourself achieving you must begin to act as if you are achieving your goals, even if on the inside you still feel far from self-confident. People who want to feel more confident in public speaking must practice it or they cannot achieve it.

This may be as simple as attending a group meeting with a list of pre thought questions to help you overcome your fear of initiating conversations with strangers. To achieve self-confidence in talking to strangers, you must practice talking to them.

A great tactic is when you are in line somewhere talk to people. Use the power of your imagination to visualize yourself doing this. Or if you are in a waiting room with others start conversations. It can be as simple as giving a compliment to someone. Of course be genuine.

Or ask a question. Even using the old comment “the weather is lovely today” works. May sound silly and simple but it works. You will be surprised how much others want to engage but are too shy or afraid to speak up. All of this will build your self confidence and enhance your capabilities.

Are you visualizing a new home. Go look at model homes and take pictures of layouts you like. If your goal is a new car go test drive one. Use the power of your imagination to see yourself owning it. Smell the new car scent. Feel the luxurious leather. All of these things boost your self confidence that you can achieve your goals. And it adds fun into the mix.

 Practice Your Achievements

Keep practicing until you feel self-confident and begin to enjoy what you previously feared. It’s important you praise yourself for achieving your goals.

Even if others also praise your efforts, it’s what you tell yourself about your achievements, which could mean the difference between becoming self-confident and continuing to struggle with low self-esteem.

Others may be generous with sharing their belief in you but until you work on it yourself your internal thoughts will hold you back.

Perhaps you are wondering if this talk of self-confidence and self-worth is something that is beneficial and if it is appropriate to act as if you are self-confident. In his best seller book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People “, Dale Carnegie wrote in the chapter on “How to Spur People on to Success,” this principle:

Praise the slightest improvement and praise

every improvement. Be “hearty in your

approbation and lavish in your praise.”

Very few people give this gift to us, so we must learn to give it to ourselves. I think as online entrepreneurs we tend to hit a milestone and keep going without rewarding ourselves. That can lead to burnout and frustration. We must acknowledge even our small wins.

I like this quote too, by Mo Seetubtim, the author of “The Happiness Planner”.

Patience, positive thinking,

mindfulness, understanding,

acceptance, resilience – you can’t

master these things overnight,

It is just like building up a muscle.

Every day you need to work on it,

practice it, and cultivate it.

Hopefully some of these ideas have resonated with you and you are inspired to work on your self-confidence as you move forward. You CAN change. Use the power of imagining yourself reaching your goals as another tool to get you what you want and deserve. You are worth it!
